A psychological thriller about two detectives, an international thriller about the FBI, and a fantasy adventure about a dying city hit movie screens this fall.

Big stars, suspenseful stories, and lots of action blast their way to movie screens this fall with these upcoming independent releases from Overture Films and Fox Walden.

Traitor

Based on a concept by actor Steve Martin, this international thriller takes place inside an intricate maze of covert counter-espionage operations. Traitor is written and directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff (screenwriter of The Day After Tomorrow). An investigation into a dangerous international conspiracy leads back to a former U.S. Special Operations officer, a Muslim American named Samir Horn (Don Cheadle), a mysterious man with connections to terrorist organizations and an ability to elude anyone searching for him. The FBI Special Task Force pursuing the case may have its own agenda in tracking down Horn – an agenda hidden beneath layers of lies.

  • Writer-Director: Jeffrey Nachmanoff
  • Additional Cast: Guy Pearce, Jeff Daniels, Neal McDonough, Mozhan Marno, Archie Panjabi
  • Rating: PG-13 (Intense Violent Sequences, Thematic Material and Brief Language)
  • Studio: Overture Films
  • Release Date: August 27, 2008

Righteous Kill

A brutal killer has a sensitive side. In the psychological thriller Righteous Kill, Academy Award winners Robert De Niro and Al Pacino star as a pair of veteran New York City police detectives searching for a vigilante serial killer. This particular killer writes poems about his crimes and leaves his four-line verses next to the crime-line corpses. Reminiscent of an earlier killer, the new crimes lead the detectives to wonder if they caught and convicted the right man years ago. As additional victims all appear to be criminals themselves, it seems the perpetrator kills thugs from a sense of righteousness.

  • Director: Jon Avnet
  • Writer: Russell Gewitz
  • Additional Cast: Carla Gugino, Donnie Wahlberg, John Leguizamo, 50 Cent
  • Rating: R (Language and a Scene of Violence)
  • Studio: Overture Films
  • Release Date: September 12, 2008

City of Ember

The citizens of Ember must race against time. Directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) and written by Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands), City of Ember tells the story of the desperate people of the City of Ember, who thrive in a world of glittering lights until a failing generator threatens their existence. The lamps that illuminate the city flicker as the citizens search the area for clues to unlock the ancient mystery of their existence before the lights go out forever. The film is based on the best-selling novel The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau.

  • Director: Gil Kenan
  • Writer: Caroline Thompson (screenplay); Jeanne Duprau (novel)
