Lynn Collins Hits the Big Screen in Wolverine

Top Lynn Collins Movies - The Number 23, Merchant of Venice, Numb, The Dog Problem, Towelhead

May 11, 2009 Kay Szydlowski

Actress Lynn Collins is a relatively new face in Hollywood, and Wolverine is definitely her first blockbuster hit.

Lynn Collins plays Kayla Silverfox in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, love interest to the title character, and a major part of the big plot twist. She plays opposite Hugh Jackman, and their on-screen chemistry is entirely decent. They carry the sweeping, fast-paced plot through several quick turns that would be otherwise unsupported by… well, logic.

Collins Is Surprisingly Good

A lot of actresses tend to get lost in the big blockbuster-type movie, especially those who are moving from some small independent roles to a huge action flick that will definitely gross more than all those indie films put together.

The surprising thing about Lynn Collins is that she pulled it off. She has a considerable command of the screen, stealing plenty of scenes and making her presence felt. She makes good use of what screen time she is given without going overboard – her choices are mostly understated. Thankfully, in a surprising departure from the obligatory attractive female in action movies, she is given some character history and plot.

Top Five Movies for New Collins Fans

1. The Number 23

Any movie headlined by Jim Carey is guaranteed success, and The Number 23 was no exception. This was the closest to a big role she’s gotten before Wolverine. Unfortunately, while the movie was a decent success, her part is relatively small. She plays a part credited as Suicide Blonde, one of the victims that fell to obsession with the number.

2. Merchant of Venice

A rare bird in modern Hollywood, Merchant of Venice is a Shakespearean drama performed with the original dialect. While this style is not for everyone and can be difficult to understand, it was well received by critics and shows Collins' thorough training as an actress at Julliard.

3. Numb

This was a fairly small movie, but Collins played the female lead opposite Matthew Perry, who still has quite a following from his Friends days. Both of them are odd, highly quirky characters who fall in love, convinced that the other person is the only one who could possibly understand their particular neuroses. This may be her cutest, most widely appealing role.

4. The Dog Problem

Co-starring with Giovanni Ribisi, Collins plays a stripper in this hilarious independent comedy of errors. It is stranger and funnier than Numb, but Collins is no less captivating. Ribisi plays an unhappy man who is told to get a dog. He does so, against his better judgement, only to run into problem after unpredictable problem. This movie never runs out of surprises, and the banter between Ribisi and Collins is fantastic.

5. Towelhead (or Nothing Is Private)

Collins has a fairly small role in this well written, thought provoking drama, but it is worth seeing nonetheless. The movie centers around a 13-year-old girl who is forced to discover her sexuality through a series of mostly cruel events which are only worsened by her abusive father. Collins shows up several times as the father’s girlfriend, and tries to develop a friendship with the girl despite the father’s derision. An intriguing character in a well-done movie, Collins is once again memorable.
